Youj vs other libraries

How Youj relates to shadcn/ui, Magic UI, Aceternity UI, HeroUI and Kibo UI, and when each is the better fit.

Youj is built on shadcn/ui, and it sits among several good React libraries. This page sets out what Youj ships and how it relates to five others. For the others it states only well-known public facts, and they change often, so check their docs for the current picture. As of October 2026.

What Youj ships

Youj 0.1
ComponentsUI components on Base UI, in shadcn's base-nova style, and motion components: primitives, effects, interactions, backgrounds and players
BlocksCards, sections and screens, copied in as source
IconsAnimated icons in @youj/icons, whose state icons morph between their two states, and a few static brand marks
IllustrationsIllustration scenes in @youj/illustrations, the kit they're drawn with, and a builder for your own
Motion systemTokens for duration, easing, springs and stagger, three motion personalities, a motion budget and overlay presets that reverse mid-flight. See Motion
Reduced motionThe provider follows the system setting. Each animated component has an instant or still alternative, described on its page
SoundOptional interface sounds in @youj/sound, silent until you add its provider. See Sound
ThemesPresets, each tuned for light and dark, or your own derived from a few inputs. checkTheme holds every color pair to WCAG AA, and the CLI and MCP server refuse a theme that misses it. See Theming
StylesClassic (the default) and Bezel, with any theme. See Looks
LanguagesBuilt-in strings in a set of locales besides English, and right-to-left layouts
How you get itnpm packages, or source through npx @youj/cli add or the shadcn CLI
CLIinit, add, create, doctor and mcp. See CLI
AI toolsAn MCP server with the docs, props, icons and install commands, and llms.txt
FigmaA plugin that builds the kit in Figma from the same tokens

shadcn/ui

shadcn/ui is Youj's base, and Youj stays grateful to it (see Credits). It gives you well-made components as source you own, a choice of Radix UI or Base UI underneath, and the registry format that Youj and many others publish to. It animates with Tailwind utility classes.

Youj keeps shadcn's component names and, where Base UI allows, its props, and adds a motion system the whole set shares, npm packages next to copy-in, animated icons, illustrations, sound, themes derived and checked for contrast, two component styles and npx @youj/cli doctor. Moving over from a Radix-based shadcn style changes some props (asChild becomes render, menu items take onClick, Select takes items): Coming from shadcn/ui walks through it and lists every change.

Choose shadcn/ui alone when you want the smallest starting point and plan to design the motion and the rest yourself.

Magic UI

Magic UI is a set of animated components and effects, often used on landing pages, installed through the shadcn CLI. It is open source, with paid templates on top.

Its items use shadcn's color variables, which Youj's stylesheet maps onto Youj tokens, so a section from Magic UI can sit in a Youj app. The difference is scope: Magic UI focuses on eye-catching effects, while Youj's motion runs through every component, from a button press to a dialog, with shared tokens and a reduced-motion state for each.

Aceternity UI

Aceternity UI offers animated, visual components for marketing pages. You copy them from its site or install them through the shadcn CLI, and it sells paid templates and blocks alongside the free components.

Like Magic UI, it is a good source of standout hero and feature sections. Youj covers the application side too: forms, data tables, overlays, navigation, app frames and the blocks built from them.

HeroUI

HeroUI, formerly NextUI, is a packaged component library built on React Aria and Tailwind CSS. You install it from npm and import its components, as you can with Youj.

It isn't built on shadcn/ui, so its components don't share shadcn's names or variables, and using it beside a shadcn-based set such as Youj means two sets of tokens to keep in step. Choose between the two by the primitives you prefer (React Aria or Base UI) and by what ships with each.

Kibo UI

Kibo UI is an open-source set of larger composable components, such as a Kanban board and a Gantt chart, built on top of shadcn/ui. You add them with its own CLI or the shadcn CLI.

It complements a shadcn-based app with components that shadcn/ui doesn't have. Youj's set is broader and animated throughout. Where Kibo has a component Youj doesn't, it can be added beside Youj through the same shadcn CLI.

When Youj fits

  • You want motion that's consistent across every component, with reduced motion handled for you.
  • You want versioned npm packages, source you own, or both in one app.
  • You want icons, illustrations, themes and sound in the same design language as the components.

Another library may fit better when you want only a minimal base (shadcn/ui), a single standout landing section (Magic UI, Aceternity UI), React Aria underneath (HeroUI), or one specific complex component (Kibo UI). Youj is also new, at version 0.1, while the others have been in use longer.
